Nigerian girls' village 'too unsafe' for Jonathan

The cancellation of President Goodluck Jonathan's first trip to the village from which more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped has reportedly infuriated the girls' relatives. According to a Sky News report, instead of going to Chiboko in northeast Borno state, Jonathan was flying direct from the capital Abuja, to Paris for a regional summit to discuss Boko Haram and wider security issues. An earlier report by Reutersindicated Jonathan had cancelled the trip to Chiboko due to security fears. "The president was planning to go but security advised otherwise on the visit," a senior government source was quoted as saying. Safety of residents Sky News reported that families of the kidnapped girls were "very upset and very angry" at the cancellation. This was addition to the fact that they were already angry at the government's response to the kidnapping. One of the abducted girls' father asked if it was unsafe for the president of the country to visit Chiboko, how did he feel about the safety of the residents living in that village. At least 223 Nigerian girls remain missing a month after they were abducted from their school by al-Qaeda-linked Boko Haram Islamists in Chiboko. Jonathan has ruled out freeing Boko Haram prisoners after the Islamist group's leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video released on Monday that the girls could be freed if government agreed to release the group's prisoners it has in custody.
